Definition:
The term Eczema Herpeticum refers to an acute
disseminated herpes simplex infection, often
appearing in individuals with compromised immune
systems. Eczema herpeticum often occurs among those
suffering from Celiac disease as well as the very
young or old. Also, it is almost always associated
with atopic dermatitis.
Symptoms:
Numerous blisters and scabs erupt on the face or
elsewhere, associated with swollen lymph glands and
fever. The virus gains entry into the system through
transmission or "flares up" from a previous
contraction, rapidly creating open, scabbed sores,
especially in ares with open sores due to atopic
dermatitis.
Treatment:
Eczema herpeticum is a potentially
life-threatening illness, and should be treated as
soon as possible. Treatment includes anti-viral
medications such as orally ingested or topical
acyclovir, as well as diet changes, wet compresses
and bedrest.
