Causes of Eczema
The cause of eczema is
still somewhat of a mystery to doctors, however they have
pinned down a few major common factors:
- Genetics: People
whose parents were born with eczema or have
eczema in their families are more likely to
develop it. Eczema is known to be associated with
allergies and allergic reactions, so those with
severe allergies or conditions such as asthma or
hay fever have a known predisposure to eczema.
- Environment: It is proposed
that people with atopic eczema are sensitive to
allergens in the environment which are harmless
to others. In atopy there is an excessive
reaction by the immune system producing inflamed,
irritated and sore skin. Associated atopic
conditions include asthma and hayfever. Other
types of eczema are caused by irritants such as
chemicals and detergents, allergens such as
nickel, and yeast growths.
- Lifestyle: It
is known that frequent hand washing, frequent
contact with cleaning solvents and irritants, and
frequent exposure to anything one is allergic to
can predispose one to eczema.
